Sivananda Yoga is one of the oldest Yoga lineages, sequenced by Swami Vishnudevananda, the disciple of Swami Sivananda.
Sivananda style has a classical and holistic approach to Hatha Yoga focusing on physical, mental and spiritual health. The style is slow paced and sequenced in a manner that after each aasana, a counter stretch for the aasana is done along with regular savasanas (corpse pose) to prevent excessive straining of muscles and joints.
The sequence starts with Kapalabati and Pranayama practice which cleanses the respiratory system and is then followed by the practice of 12 aasanas at a slow pace with specific importance to breathing.
The basic principles of Sivananda style yoga are:
- Proper exercise (aasanas)
- Proper breathing (pranayama)
- Proper diet (saatvic)
- Proper relaxation (savasana)
- Meditation & Positive thinking
