Tension & Trauma Release Exercises (or TRE®) is an innovative series of exercises that assist the body in releasing deep muscular patterns of stress, tension and trauma. Created by Dr. David Berceli, PhD, TRE safely activates a natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating that releases muscular tension, calming down the nervous system. When this muscular shaking/vibrating mechanism is activated in a safe and controlled environment, the body is encouraged to return back to a state of balance.
TRE is based on the fundamental idea, backed by recent research into the physiology of the body under stress, that tension and experiences of overwhelm are remembered in the body’s physicality, life cycles, as well as psychology. Unlocking dense difficulties experienced through life cannot always be achieved or rebound fully without allowing time and space for subconscious physical tensions to decompress.
Guidance through the TRE series gives each practitioner personal choice through a familiar approach to exercising that assists learning to negotiate their own rhythm and threshold from ease to resistance, towards breakthrough. Some come to felt realizations of their internal blockages or mental override of the power and wisdom of their bodies; many other times, the experience of tremoring is reported to be peaceful, with feelings of life vibration and well-being as pleasant and soothing.
Who Is This For?
Students of yoga may already have experienced involuntary shaking or tremoring during their asana practice, and used their muscular control to subdue what seems like instability in the body.
They may also be familiar with how involuntary emotions can show up during a physicalized practice, particularly in certain poses. Most persons, however, may not have ventured into seeking a practice of involuntary motion and surrender to the body’s natural wave of expression — or only experience such states of being as ecstatic or traumatic and almost out of their bodies.
TRE is a middle way to accessing subconscious motives in the body while necessitating being rooted in the physical form. It is designed for anyone to be able to realize their body’s capacity for instinctual behavior in a safe, supportive, non-judgmental and holistically productive way.
It is for anyone who feels drawn at this time to cultivate a deepened capacity for physical expression of the many layers of experience, feeling, and awareness, to being whole.
Who Is This NOT For?
As this is an introductory workshop geared towards the general public, anyone with significant past experiences of distress, particularly sexual trauma, may wish to work in an individualized setting or to assure themselves of adequate integrative time and support following the experience.
Anyone pregnant, on a current prescription of psychoactive medications, in a state of acute trauma, will be best advised on an individual basis.
Please note, anyone with significant cardiovascular or pulmonary conditions should consult their medical doctor prior to engaging in exercise, and that the practice of TRE and coaching by the TRE practitioner is not a substitute for professional psychological or medical consult.
This introductory workshop will explain and explore the actions of the nervous system so as to be able to be applied practically to every day life, as well as related to more extreme states of experience, such as life transitions, shock, aggression, bystander trauma, freeze states, and give visual and experiential tools towards understanding and empathy for individualized differences for such experiences.
We aim to normalize the body’s physiology of emotions and feeling, amplified into physical expression, as nothing to be ashamed of, and in fact key towards full, natural expressions of creative life force and the essence of being.
Engaging with the TRE protocol of guided exercises leads to the opportunity for each person to experience and navigate their “shake”, to learn to encounter their unknown aspects of self, curiously, fearlessly, with intention not for any particular outcome but for the possibility of radical acceptance, empowerment, self-love, and authentic emotional expression.

Mel’s had a lifetime of movement since her first migration away from Singapore at 5 years old, leapfrogging countries again at 7, 8, 14, 18. Her first full realization of unified consciousness came from a towering pine tree in crisp Pennsylvania autumn — “I am that tree; and that tree, is me” — a childlike soul expansion that became the basis of understanding transpersonal somatic empathy and transmutation, and the embrace of the mystical and radical compassion.
